Posted by Adam Chard in How to guides | 2 years ago 3 min read

With energy bills rising and the prospect of some suppliers going bust, saving energy is more important than ever. To help you do just that, check out our top 10 energy saving tips below.

Due to added pressure on gas and energy supplies around the world, UK gas prices have increased by 250% since the start of the year. And now, with a higher price cap being introduced from 1st October 2021, households across the UK are facing a 12% rise in energy bills.

As we are all aware, saving water is important in terms of helping the environment, but in comparison, it’s gas and electricity where you can save the real money, just by following some simple advice.

10 energy saving tips for your home

Here’s a list of great ways to save energy on your standard, dual fuel bills:

1. Wear more, save more

When the outdoor temperature is a colder, don’t have your heating on full; wear more clothes instead.

2. Turn your thermostat down

According to Simple Energy Advice, every degree above 20 degrees can put up to another 10% on your energy bill.

3. Use energy efficient light bulbs

Here’s a bright idea: By fitting low energy light bulbs, you can save £5 per light bulb, per year. And make sure you turn them off when you leave the room!

4. Wash clothes in colder water

It makes very little difference to how your clothes come out of the wash, especially with modern detergent.

5. Turn all electrical appliances off when not in use

Before you go to bed, switch TVs and other appliances off at the wall—don’t leave them on standby. If you're working from home, don’t forget to unplug your laptop, phone/tablet chargers and any other electrical devices.

6. Apply for a government grant

£2bn has been set aside for home energy-efficiency improvements in England. If you’re eligible for a grant, you could pay towards improvements like loft insulation, draught-proofing windows or a new boiler.

There are also some great government subsidies on solar panels, for example, that could help reduce your carbon footprint, as well as your bills.

7. Fill your kettle up to the level you need

Endless cups of tea and coffee get many of us through the day but, by boiling only the amount of water you need for one cup, will save you money in the long-run.

If you get through a lot of boiling water every day (for example, if you and your family all work from home), an instant boiling water tap may save you cash.

8. Look at technological solutions such as energy monitors

These tell you in monetary value how much you’re spending on energy and are often available from your energy supplier for free. It could save you up to £100 a year.

9. Think about energy when cooking

This could be by cooking in greater quantity, using the right pan and hob, not pre-heating the oven and keeping the door shut during cooking.

10. Go for efficient appliances

Changing your boiler to a grade A boiler could save you £300 a year. Also, take a closer look at the energy consumption of any replacement kitchen appliances you may buy, such as fridges and ovens. This could save you lots of money in the long run.

Small changes = Big savings

Some of these changes may seem expensive in the short term but will save you lots of money in the longer term. If you don’t have the cash to splash, often just changing your habits or switching energy supplier can make all the difference, saving you more money than you'd think.
