Wardrobe buying guide

Posted by Adam Chard in Buying guides | 8 years ago 3 min read

According to sustainable resources charity Wrap, the average UK household owns around £4,000 worth of clothes—and around 30% of clothing in wardrobes has not been worn for at least a year. All those loved and unloved clothes need a home, so buying the perfect sized wardrobe is a crucial decision.

This guide will tell you everything you need to know about wardrobes, how to choose the right type, material and things to think about before you buy.

Types of wardrobe

Yes, believe it or not, there are different types of wardrobe.

2 door

2 door wardrobes are the most common type of wardrobe you’d find in an average home and will consist of an internal hanging rail and may sometimes have an extra shelf at the top.

3 door

Perfect for those with a large number of clothes. Three door wardrobes often feature 2 separate hanging spaces—one large and one small, but can sometimes come with one wardrobe compartment, with the third door containing shelves.

Gent’s wardrobe

To put it simply, a gent’s wardrobe is an old-fashioned name for a 2 door wardrobe with drawers at the bottom.

Gents wardrobe

A gent's wardrobe with 2 doors and 2 drawers at the bottom.

With drawers

Basically what it says on the tin, a wardrobe with built-in drawers. These can either be at the bottom (as in a gent’s wardrobe) or as one section of the wardrobe.

Material and colour

There is a wide range of options available to you when it comes to the material and colour of your wardrobe.

Here are some of the options you could choose:

Oak

Oak is one of the most popular materials used in bedroom furnishings and provides a clean, natural wooden finish, not just in the bedroom, but throughout the home.

Reclaimed pine

Pine is a naturally light coloured wood finish and is a more traditional material when it comes to bedroom furnishings. It’s absolutely ideal for those looking to create a timeless, classical style in their home, but can also just as easily form part of a contemporary interior.

Walnut and black gloss

For a more modern look, black gloss is a great way to turn your bedroom contemporary and the dark walnut wood effect complements this colour perfectly.

Oak and white gloss

If you’re looking to brighten up your room, an oak and white gloss wardrobe would do the trick perfectly. The white gloss allows natural light to reflect, improving the lighting in your room as well as making it appear bigger.

Things to think about

Before you buy there are a number of things to consider.

Think hard about your collection of clothes, do you have more shirts? Lots of underwear? Items that can be folded? Items that need to be hung? This will help you base your decision on which to buy and whether you’re going to go for an internal rail, internal rail with shelving or wardrobes with drawers built-in.
