Your guide to planning a bathroom makeover

Posted by Adam Chard in Room planning | 8 years ago 4 min read

Making sure you get your design right is key to ensuring you get the bathroom of your dreams as an end result, this is a handy guide to help you do just that.

As one of the most functional rooms in the house, how your bathroom is arranged and designed is highly important, so here at Victoria Plum, we’re on a mission to prove to the nation that an aspirational, designer-look bathroom is easy to achieve on virtually any budget.

However, the cost of fitting a bathroom varies drastically, so price is what individuals typically look at first—but where should your priorities lie when planning your bathroom?

DIY dilemma

According to a report on Which?, as much as 70% of the overall cost of installing a new bathroom can be eradicated by opting for a Do It Yourself option. The downside to this strategy is that without the appropriate skills or expertise you could find yourself in hot water.

Plumbers go through thorough training in order to be able to work on bathrooms and even something as small as leaking pipes can cause a large amount of damage if unnoticed or left untreated. The best option may therefore be to make the important decisions regarding what fixtures and fittings to include but leave it up to the professionals to install them for you.

Choosing fixtures

When it comes to fixtures, the size of your bathroom will ultimately determine what sort of units you can have. If your room is small then compact cloakroom furniture is probably best whilst those with larger spaces benefit from greater choice.

Of course it’s not only the dimensions which you need to consider but also the type and style of your chosen appliances. Baths, basins, showers and toilets all come in various styles and here are the main options which you should consider.

Bath

Roll top baths are designed to be more central features and often sit upon elevated feet for a luxury look. Corner baths are ideal for a spa atmosphere while rectangular units fit snugly against walls and are the conventional option for bathrooms with a range of decor.

Basin

Your main options are between pedestal basins and counter top basins. The former is the more traditional of the two while the latter creates a strong centrepiece with the addition of a vanity unit with the aesthetic appeal of a modern design.

Shower

Numerous options are available from fixed shower heads and mixer showers to shower rail kits and you’ll need to select the one right for you and your bathroom.

A bath shower mixer (or combination tap) is perfect for those who don’t have the space to accommodate a separate shower enclosure and are exceptionally cost-effective as they don’t require additional plumbing work. Electric and power showers are considered the most powerful but may not be suitable for every home. Power showers need the water supply to come from both the hot water cylinder and the cold reservoir and cannot be used in conjunction with combination boilers, for example.

Thermostatic shower valve options are ideal for family homes as the temperature and flow of water is controlled precisely so that it is not affected when the water supply is being simultaneously used in another area of the home.

Choosing fittings

After you’ve decided on the main units and considered the rough layout for your bathroom, it’s time to turn your attention to fittings. Even basics such as taps have plenty of variety on offer so it’s important you give them considerable though.

Optional extras like heated towel rails, storage cabinets and decorative elements can then added if your budget allows.

Once you have worked out which items you need, the next step is to plan your bathroom layout.
