Bathroom ideas: New Retro part 4

Posted by Nicky Kingston in Style guides | 5 years ago 6 min read

In the fourth and final part of our “Get the look” style guide, I’ll show you exactly which products we used for our roomset, so you can shop the look.

If you haven’t done so already, I’d advise starting from part 1 and working back through this style guide.

  • In part 1, we discovered what the New Retro look is all about and examined the influences behind this popular bathroom design.
  • Choosing the right bathroom products, from your bath to your basins, was the emphasis of part 2, where we discovered which shapes and designs suit the New Retro look.
  • In part 3, we got down to the really fun part—accessorising, choosing your colours, tiles and textures.

New Retro bathroom

New Retro bathroom product list

To achieve the New Retro look, we mainly used products from Mode Bathrooms. Whilst it may seem counterintuitive, using contemporary style items that are very much on-trend, the clean lines and lack of embellishments closely resemble the modern designs of the period.

Where possible, we opted for products from the same collection, for a coordinated look and feel, however, the New Retro look doesn't have to rely on everything matching perfectly. As long as you follow the advice I gave in parts 1–3 of this style guide, you should have a wide range of products to pick from.

We chose the following:

Bath

The Cooper freestanding bath from Mode Bathrooms is the ideal choice for the New Retro style. With straight lines and angles more akin to a regular straight bath, the Cooper can be positioned in any orientation, including up against a wall when space is at a premium. The clean, gloss white panels, which are integral to its design, reflect light, keeping your bathroom feeling nice and airy. There's even a slightly larger lip on one side, so you can keep things close at hand.

Shower area

The most striking aspect of the shower area has to be the acrylic wall panels in a gorgeous shade of blue. Zenolite acrylic wall panels come in a range of bold colours, so you don't just have to plump for one colour scheme. What's more, they are between 3 to 6 times faster to install than tiles and can be applied directly over the top of existing wall coverings.

In our roomset, we've included both a bath and shower installation, simply to demonstrate the kind of look you can achieve. With a smaller room, it may be more practical to have one or the other. The 8mm walk in shower enclosure pictured below comes complete with a shower tray made from acrylic capped ABS and polyurethane foam. The walk in design keeps your bathroom feeling spacious, whilst the 8mm British Standard safety glass features a special coating that cuts down the time you'll need to spend cleaning.

With the key to this look being geometric shapes, we went for the Ellis thermostatic shower from Mode Bathrooms, complete with triple concealed valve and dual outlet use. Both the overhead shower and handset are square in shape, featuring silicone nozzles that simply rub clean. In fact, everything is angular, right down to the wall outlet, valve controls and slider rail.

Vanity unit and basins

The Burton white & rustic oak vanity unit from Mode Bathrooms really brings the New Retro look to life, thanks to the combination of white gloss sides and the oak effect drawer fronts. These finishes come together brilliantly to evoke a mid-century feel. Plus, as a double vanity unit, you and your partner can both have your own private section of the bathroom, dedicated to you. At the same time, the wall hung design keeps your floor space free, giving you a perfect uninterrupted view of those lovely floor tiles.

Taps

Precision engineered with angles in all the right places, the Austin tap range from Mode Bathrooms lends itself particularly well to the New Retro look.

To complement the clean lines of your bath, the Austin 4 hole bath shower mixer tap comes with separate controls for hot and cold supplies, plus a cunningly concealed shower handset which can be returned to its holder when not in use.

Meanwhile, the matching basin mixer tap comes complete with a cube-shaped lever control for added style.

Toilet

Designed to complement the shape of the bath perfectly, the Cooper wall hung toilet does a similar job to the wall hung vanity unit, helping to maintain an uninterrupted view of your feature floor. In this instance, we've concealed the cistern behind a false wall, however, a close coupled toilet can be just as effective.

Heating

When it comes to keeping your New Retro bathroom warm and cosy, you can keep things sleek with this Cadence vertical radiator from Mode Bathrooms. At just 140mm wide, it can fit into even the tightest of spaces, using your wall space to its maximum potential. The clean lines and brushed steel finish fit perfectly with the overall look.

Tiles

To finish off our New Retro bathroom, we used 2 different wall tiles and a feature floor tile, all from [British Ceramic Tile].

Metro tiles are incredibly versatile and can be used to complement bathrooms from any era. We picked out these White metro flat gloss tiles, as opposed to bevelled-edge designs, as they best represent the look.

These honey coloured glazed tiles from the prestigious [V&A tile range] are perfect as an accent colour, combining perfectly with both the white and bold blue.

Finally, we come to the pièce de résistance, the funky feature floor. We achieved this striking look using Geometric grey feature floor tiles from British Ceramic Tile. The stunning design is a visual treat and I simply love the way it encapsulates the whole look and feel of our New Retro bathroom.

Lighting

To add a touch of additional lighting to the vanity unit, we used the Forum Arinna 2 light over mirror bathroom light. These beautiful lights have been designed with a nod to retro styles—the perfect choice for our bathroom.
