Outdated bathroom suites left relatively untouched since the 1970s are not as uncommon as you might think. As many of us make the decision to renovate our homes slowly, on a basis of one room at a time, it is inevitable that one space should be left behind. In this scenario, it is often the bathroom that is last to make the turn to modernity as it is the room in which we spend the least time.

The good news is that it doesn't take much to grab your bathroom and pull it out of the 70s. A modern bathroom is an essential part of a modern home. Here, we take a look at a few things you can do to bring your bathroom into the 21st century.

Tiling
The 1970s bathroom was known for its unique colouring. The chances are that your walls are decked out with tiles slightly off in colour, giving the 'cigarette smoke' tinge that so few of us look for in a bathroom design. Today's bathroom colours are simple. In fact, if you need a breather after the intensity of your old suite, you can't go wrong with plain white tiles.
The suite
On the off chance that your tiles weren't frightening in colour, there's a good bet that the suite itself was. Faded pea greens and dark vanilla were all the rage back in the 70s but colours this strong tend to suck energy from the modern bathroom. Begin by replacing these with a white suite, but it's the design of these which will make the real difference.
The basin
We've already mentioned the colour change which your bathroom should prepare to undergo, but let's move onto the style. Modern basins can be less intrusive without becoming nondescript. A particularly popular and modern basin design is the counter top basin. This allows you to maximise storage space underneath the bowl, without sacrificing any room within the bowl itself. It's also a great opportunity to opt for an interesting style.

The walk in shower is more popular than ever before. If you've got the space in your bathroom, it's time to do away with combined baths and showers, not to mention folding doors. The walk in shower provides a feeling of luxury and space which would be alien to any bathroom from the 1970s.

It's time to rip out that 70s tub and replace it with something that will help you unwind. Freestanding bath tubs are becoming increasingly popular with an air of elegance about them that will have you pining to spend more time in your bathroom.
