7 big bathroom trends all in one space

Our “Heavenly Seven” bathroom has been designed around 7 of the biggest trends we’ve seen this year. These include the following, and I’ll go through each of them in turn. However, if you’d like to jump to a trend which interests you the most, simply click on any of the links below:

By combining all of these top trends in the one space, you could pick 1, 2 or even all of them for your own bathroom design.

So, where do I find out what is up and coming in the world of bathroom trends? Read on…

Bathroom trends inspiration

Inspiration for an on-trend bathroom can come from many different places. If you don’t have access to the latest trend forecasts (and, really, why would you?), there are plenty of great resources out there.

First off, Pinterest is an invaluable source of fantastic imagery from interior designers right around the world. You can easily find pics that interest you, build your own Pinterest boards and share your own photos. Instagram is yet another image-based social media platform that I use every day. Simply search for certain keywords like #BathroomTrends or #BathroomInspiration, for example, to discover the very latest on-trend looks for bathrooms.

Once you have some ideas, you’ll want to pull them all together. The best way to do this is to create a mood board. Traditionally, this is done by cutting out pictures from magazines, picking out materials and selecting colours, then pasting them all to a large piece of board. However, in this modern age, it’s just as easy to create an online version.

Here’s one I made earlier for our “Heavenly Seven” bathroom.

Next, let’s take a look at each of the 7 bathroom trends that feature in our Heavenly Seven bathroom, and show you how to “Get the Look”.

1. Wellbeing and Biophilic design

Tending to our own mental wellbeing is a subject that continues to dominate our lives, so it’s hardly surprising to find this reflected in the latest home interior trends. The need for a space in which we can relax, unwind and disconnect from all our electronic devices is more important than ever, which is where bathrooms can play a vital role. Biophilic design is a way in which this can be achieved.

So, what is biophilic design, I hear you cry? Well, “biophilia” means that we, as humans, have a natural affinity with the natural world around us. Biophilic design is simply the incorporation of the natural world into our own everyday lives.

Big bathroom trends: Biophilic design

One of the easiest ways to create a biophilic design in your bathroom is through the addition of greenery. The benefits of houseplants and the impact they have on our own wellbeing are well documented and there are many interesting ways to bring a touch of greenery to your bathroom. From a full living wall (as pictured below) to trailing plants on a shelf, there’s always space for plantlife in your bathroom.

2. Open showers

Easy access is the name of the game these days, especially when it comes to your showering space. Walk in shower enclosures, without doors, are proving exceedingly popular, however, interior designers are taking things one step further and creating fully, open plan showers, often without glass screens.

Top trends: Open plan showers

A wet room, or at least a partial wet room area, with tiled, level flooring and a concealed shower tray is the way to go. This allows you to open up your space, allowing for a lighter, airier, atmosphere entirely.

3. Split-level bathrooms

One way of elevating the look and feel of your bathroom (quite literally) is to create a split-level layout—and it’s a trend that’s certainly on the rise!

A natural way to zone your space, allowing you to separate out showering, bathing and toilet areas, split-level flooring can be used to show off certain elements, like a stunning roll top bath.

In our bathroom, we’ve used split-level flooring to highlight our open-plan shower area and create a distinct space in which this can exist.

4. Green bathrooms

Choosing a colour for your bathroom certainly isn’t easy. Certain shades go in and out of fashion faster than some reality TV stars! Yet, there are a few that stay the course, remaining a firm favourite with interior designers. One such colour is green and, as such, you’ll find plenty of ideas for green bathrooms right here at Victoria Plum.

Top trends: Green bathrooms

Green is a very calming colour, allowing us to reconnect with our natural environment. It features among the colours of the year for 2022, as nominated by colour experts around the world.

There are many, many options open to you when adding green into your colour scheme. From metro tiles to simple painted walls, you’ll find plenty of choices for your bathroom. One creative approach, which also ticks another trend box, is to fit green wall panelling, adding a stunning backdrop for both contemporary and traditional style interiors alike.

5. Creative lighting

If your current bathroom is illuminated by a boring old ceiling fixture, you need to lighten up! These days, you’ll find a diverse range of creative lighting, designed specifically for bathrooms, from gorgeous wall lights to opulent, oversized ceiling lights. So, there really are no excuses when it comes to picking out on-trend lighting.

One thing you must take into consideration is that special regulations apply to electrics in bathrooms. Depending on which “zone” your lighting is in, you will need to choose a light that meets the minimum specifications. Find out more about this in our bathroom lighting guide.

Top trends: Creative bathroom lighting

In our bathroom, we’ve supplemented the minimalist style downlights with some rather funky wall lights either side of the mirrors. By fitting a secondary lighting option, you can change up the mood whenever you feel like it. You’ll certainly feel more calm and relaxed than you would under the harsh glare of spotlights.

6. Coloured ceramics

If you’ve ever updated a 1980s bathroom, you’ll likely remember the weird and wonderful coloured suites from that era, including delightful shades like salmon pink and avocado. So, it’s no wonder we all stuck rigidly to white suites from the 90s onwards.

Top trends: Coloured ceramics

Despite this, coloured ceramics are making a big comeback, not least in the form of washbasins. With modern manufacturing techniques, a wide array of delightful colours can be achieved to complement contemporary bathroom designs. To go with the on-trend green theme, why not choose beautiful olive green (as pictured above)?

7. Arches

Curves help soften the overall look and feel of a room, especially one which is full of mainly hard objects. This is why you’ll find plenty of bathroom suites that contain rounded shapes. However, there are other ways to bring curvaceous appeal to your space and it’s the subject of this very trend.

Top bathroom trends: Arches

Whilst we’ve accentuated the curves throughout our own bathroom design, you needn’t go as far as having an arch-shaped room or cutting out an arched-shaped doorway. There are much easier ways to achieve this trend, like simply adding an arched mirror.

Incorporating the top trends into a small bathroom

A small bathroom needn’t limit your creativity, especially when it comes to adding in some on-trend touches. Whether you’re updating a family bathroom, an ensuite or even a downstairs toilet, you can still pick out several of our top trends.

Take this bathroom, for example. How many of our top trends can you see?

Well, for starters, we’ve used the same green panelling as we did in our larger bathroom, to place this colour centre-stage, while wall mounted baskets bring some biophilic design to the room, without using up vital floorspace. Meanwhile, the green coloured basin and shelf help save on space, illuminated by feature lighting, either side of the arched mirror.

How about going even smaller, like a downstairs toilet or cloakroom? Let’s see…

Even in a narrow space like this, we’ve managed to add in green panelling, wall mounted plants, some creative lighting and an arch-shaped mirror, ticking at least 4 of our on-trend boxes. As with any small bathroom, don’t forget to be careful and considered with your choice of accessories.
