Different styles of basin

Much like bathrooms in general, basins come in 2 broad styles: contemporary (often referred to as “modern”) and traditional. The style you go for should be based on the overall look of your bathroom.

Contemporary or modern basins are characterised by clean lines, simple shapes and unfussy designs. Inspired by current trends in interior design, they are very popular and fit perfectly with today’s modern homes. Most contemporary sinks come with a single tap hole, allowing you to accessorise with a basin mixer tap.

On the other hand, traditional basins feature elegant and, often elaborate, designs with bevelled edges, chamfered corners and Victorian or Edwardian-inspired themes. These designs have stood the test of time, never going out of fashion, which is great if you want a bathroom that looks timeless. Traditional sinks can come with either a single tap hole or, often, 2 taps holes, for use with separate hot and cold pillar taps—a more traditional feature.

Of course, these broad styles offer only a guide to the many, many bathroom sinks you’ll find at Victoria Plum, which vary by shape, size, style and design.

Which shape?

As with styles, basins can be broadly split into round basins or square basins. Whichever basin shape you prefer is entirely up to you, but as a general guide, take a look at other shapes within your bathroom design. If you’ve chosen a predominantly curved suite, a round sink may be a more sympathetic option, whereas a more angular suite and furniture will suit a square sink better.

Basins for small bathrooms

For those smaller bathrooms, like an ensuite or cloakroom, small basins offer a great space-saving solution. While big pedestal basins are ideal for the master bathroom, where family members need to wash faces and brush teeth, sinks in smaller spaces don’t need to be quite so large or versatile. In a downstairs toilet, for example, the basin may only be used for hand washing, which is where a compact design will prove more than adequate.

Combining your basin with furniture

One popular way to maximise space in your bathroom is to combine your sink with your bathroom furniture. A vanity unit performs just this task, by providing a basin which is built into a furniture unit, containing a cupboard and doors, drawers or even a combination of the two. Washstands are another way to provide additional storage space with your basin, usually built within a metal or wooden frame.

Another common way to combine your sink and furniture is to choose a semi recessed basin, which can be added to a worktop or countertop. This is common design when used with fitted bathroom furniture.
