Shabby chic bathroom style guide

Looking for a unique way to give your bathroom a style-edge? Shabby chic is a classic design choice with plenty going for it but just how do you go about bringing it into the bathroom?

Here at VictoriaPlum.com, we’re dedicated to helping you get the most out of your home and this bathroom style guide will give you all the shabby chic secrets.

What is shabby chic?

Before you can integrate a style into your home you need to know what it is and what defines it. So, what is shabby chic?

The truth is, no-one really knows! The style is fairly individualistic and this is great news for homeowners. You don’t have to worry about following a firm set of rules when decorating but can rather focus on key trends and ideas, adding your own stamp as you go along.

How to create a shabby chic bathroom

You need to look at the furniture and general decor first. You want light walls (white is always good but so is grey or other muted tones) and a plain floor while furniture should be aged or distressed.

If you want to create a contrast, keep furniture dark but use sand paper to give it an uneven finish. If you’re after something a little more uniform then adding a white wash after this stage is a popular option.

Remember that matching furniture isn’t necessary with a shabby chic bathroom so why not be eclectic in your choice and buy odd items instead? You’ll still need to match your accessories though so look for delicate floral prints for curtains/blinds and storage containers. You’ll also want to distress the frame of your mirror and any artwork placed on the wall.

Your bathroom suite choice should be a traditional option such as the Winchester for that rustic effect:

For the floors, opt for something plain and hardwearing in a traditional style. Stone tiles are an obvious first choice but you can get vinyl flooring in these finishes if you’re after a more modern solution. Remember to keep colour schemes neutral, light and airy and avoid any dark or bold coloured flooring. Traditional bright blue bathrooms are definitely out!

Best colours

Pale and muted palettes are best here and key shabby chic colours are:

  • White, cream and beige
  • Muted browns, greys and black (used sparingly for contrast)
  • Pastels including pink, blue, green and yellow

Key features

Although it has no firm definition, there are many features common to the shabby chic style. Some of the basic elements of the style are:

  • Delicate furnishings using floral patterns and lace trims
  • Homely accessories including patterned holders and wicker baskets for laundry
  • Elegant lighting such as traditional chandeliers
  • Distressed furniture with mix-match of styles and units
  • Plain walls and floors using muted colours or traditional patterns and effects
