How to fake the look with tile wallpaper

Posted by Nicky Kingston in Inspiration | 3 years ago 5 min read

If tiling your whole bathroom or kitchen simply isn’t practical, we’ll show you how to “fake the look” with these fab tile wallpaper ideas.

Working to a tight budget? One of the major costs you’ll encounter when it comes to your bathroom or kitchen renovation is tiling, especially if you hire a professional to do this for you.

Wallpaper for bathrooms and kitchens can be just as stylish as tiles, yet costs a fraction of the price and is considerably easier and quicker to do.

Of course, wallpaper isn’t practical for splash zones, like the interior walls of a shower enclosure or around your bath or basin, however, you can simply be selective with the areas you tile or use shower wall panels instead, then wallpaper the rest.

Below, we take a look at some easy ways you can “fake the look” with our great tile wallpaper ideas.

Brickwork makes the dream work

If you’re blessed with a period property, rough brick walls can be incorporated into the overall design of your interiors for an amazing rustic or industrial look. However, for most of us, this simply isn’t possible—so, why not fake the look instead?

Superfresco easy new brick grey wallpaper

This grey brick wallpaper from the Superfresco easy range isn’t strictly a tile wallpaper, yet, with the appearance of slate bricks, you can quickly bring a more organic tough to your bathroom or kitchen.

Of course, slate isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking to complement a more neutral colour scheme, this grey and terracotta wallpaper from the same range might be more your cup of tea.

Plus, with Superfresco’s “paste the wall” technology (which does exactly what it says on the tin), there’s less mess and less fuss—perfect if, like me, you prefer your DIY tasks to be short and sweet!

Mosaically-minded

Mosaic tiles look fabulous but can often be tricky and time-consuming to install. So, out of all our tile wallpaper ideas, this may be the most popular!

Contour earthen mid grey wallpaper

Featuring a beautiful textured finish, this Earthen mid grey wallpaper from Graham & Brown’s Contour range is perfect for bathrooms and kitchens. Plus, as it’s washable, you can quickly and easily remove any marks and stains—perfect if you have younger children who tend to leave mucky handprints everywhere!

Looking for something a little more exotic? The stunning Cermica mosaic wallpaper from Fine Décor also comes with a gorgeous textured finish and a beautiful pattern in deep teal. And, if you’re looking to create a genuine eco bathroom that impacts less on the environment, you’ll be pleased to hear this wallpaper is approved by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), meaning materials are sourced sustainably.

“Wood” you?

How do you fake a fake? Why, with wood effect tile wallpaper, of course!

Many homeowners choose wood effect tiles in bathrooms and kitchens, as natural wood is impractical for areas of high moisture content. However, if you really need to cut back on the cost of your renovation, wood tile effect wallpaper is a great way to get the look for less.

Fine Decor Wooden plank sidewall gold wallpaper

With this Wooden plank sidewall gold wallpaper from the Fine Decor range, you’re left with gorgeous walls that replicate the appearance of wood. It’s washable, incredibly cost-effective and would be ideal for coastal or nautical-themed bathrooms.

Feel like adding a pattern to your tile wallpaper? This parquet white wallpaper from the Superfresco easy range looks simply stunning.

Perfect patterns

Patterned tiles are proving very popular right now, with many homeowners using them on walls and floors to really lift the look of their interiors. To keep costs low, why not consider patterned tile wallpaper instead?

Contour porches grey wallpaper

With Porches grey wallpaper from Graham & Brown’s Contour range, you can create a spectacular feature wall or simply paper your whole room (except splash zones, of course) for a dramatic effect.

Geometric patterns remain incredibly popular for walls and floors, which is why this Marble marquetry grey wallpaper from the same range is a real bestseller. Giving the appearance of a traditional marquetry design (where wood veneer would be added to form decorative patterns), this wallpaper is perfect for traditional style interiors.

Metro for those on the move

Last, but by no means least, where would we be without a metro tile wallpaper? Metro tiles—which replicate the elegant designs which were commonly found in underground stations around the world—have been “top of the tiles” for several years. As they tend to be smaller in size, they can be more time-consuming and more expensive to install. So, why not fake the look with this stylish white metro tile effect wallpaper?

With a textured finish, metro tile wallpaper is incredibly versatile, lending itself well to both contemporary and traditional interiors alike.
