Bed buying guide

Posted by Adam Chard in Buying guides | 8 years ago 6 min read

Estimates suggest that the average person could spend up to 25 years of their life in bed.

It’s not only the place where you sleep, laze around - and most importantly love, but it’s also the stylistic barometer in determining the style of any bedroom. In short, buying a bed is a big decision and getting the decision right is central to creating a great looking bedroom.

This guide will talk you through the key things that you need to consider when buying a new bed.

Decide on the size

This is the very first thing you have to consider. We would all like to laze around in the palatial luxury of a super king size bed, but in reality space can be limited, so your choice may also be limited to more space-efficient options.

Although the dimensions of your room are clearly where to make your decision, if budget is limited you may also be better off opting for a smaller bed. You should also consider how you sleep: Do you sleep on your front, back or side? How much room do you require?

Which size should you choose?

Double bed

If there are 2 of you and space is an issue, a double bed may well be your best bet. With dimensions of anything up to 1500mm x 2000mm, despite not being the most generous proportion, they still easily provide enough room for two of you to sleep in comfort.

King sized bed

If you’ve got enough space for a little more room, the King is next size up. With dimensions of anything over 1500mm x 2000mm there’s easily enough space for two people to sleep in luxuriously, its grand dimensions guarantee that you’re not going to be pushed to the edge and woken from a good night’s sleep.

Super king sized bed

The ultimate in luxurious slumber, the super king is the most opulent choice, and let’s be honest, if you’ve got the space and the budget, this is the size you want. With extravagant dimensions of around 2000mm x 2200mm there is ample room for you, your partner and, well, whoever else you might want in there. We offer a splendid range of beautifully crafted king size beds.

Decide on the function

Where in your house are you buying the bed for? Is it for your master bedroom or is it for the guest bedroom?

Bedroom/guestroom

You obviously want to give your guests somewhere nice to sleep, but if you’re buying a bed for the spare room it might be an idea to look at a bed with storage options—and also to consider a double rather than a king. However, if your bed is going to be the centrepiece of your new-look master bedroom, if you’ve got the room, you may well just want to go for an opulent and luxurious king or super king.

Bed storage

A bed doesn’t just have to be where you sleep, it can also be a great way of adding much needed extra storage to your bedroom space. Our range of storage beds have drawers underneath the mattress, providing you with a discreet storage solution that utilises dead space.

Decide on the style

The style of your bed dictates the look and feel of the rest of your bedroom. It’s important then that you get both the finish and the style right.

Wood

Wood is always a safe bet as a finish for your bed, bringing a classy, natural tone to your bedroom. If you also consider that you’re likely to keep your bed for a good few years, it’s a good idea to pick a tone that won’t go out of fashion.

Darker woods such as Walnut help provide a masculine and contemporary style, whereas lighter tones, such as Oak are more versatile and work with a variety of different colour pallets. Whatever you’re looking for, its best to have a good think about what you want to achieve.

White and complementary colours

White is always a great choice if you’re injecting colour into your bathroom in other ways, providing a neutral tone that provides you with more scope for personalisation in other aspects of your bedroom. A great example of a subtle choice along these lines is the Rome oak and mellow sage.

Fabrics

Opting for a fabric is a great way to not only add a soft and gentle texture to your bedroom. However, depending on the colour can also transform your bedroom into a bonafide boudoir – with luxury purples, reds or silvers, as available with the Serene silver below.
