6 fun patterned tiles for bathrooms and kitchens

Create the perfect feature floor or wall with these 6 fun patterned tiles for bathrooms and kitchens.

One of the most thrilling parts of planning a bathroom or kitchen is choosing your wall and floor coverings. As they make up a greater proportion of your surfaces, the decisions you make can have a massive bearing on the overall look of your room.

Many people opt for plain tiles, often in a range of safe, neutral colours. Or, if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can mix and match different shades. However, if you really want to get with the latest trends, patterned tiles are the way to go!

To inspire you, we’ve picked out 6 of our favourite patterned tiles to demonstrate what you can achieve.

1. Victorian style

Patterned tiles from wall to wall can be a little too much, however that shouldn’t put you off using them in large quantity. One way of breaking up the look is to add wooden panels to the lower portion of your wall (painted in a colour that complements your scheme), then either continue using the same tiles across the floor or switch to a plainer tile, as we’ve done below (or vice versa). This look lends itself particularly well to traditional bathrooms and kitchens.

Calcolo Crane vitrified ceramic feature wall and floor tiles 250mm x 250mm

These particular tiles are made from high quality vitrified ceramic for exceptional durability. Simply join 4 tiles together in a square to complete the motif. Inspired by Victorian designs, you can really enhance the look and feel of a period property.

2. A stunning backdrop

Of course, you needn’t go crazy with the amount of tiling in your bathroom or kitchen. You could simply create a backdrop by tiling part the way up the wall or filling the space between units, like we did with these neutral patterned tiles.

Calcolo Toledo Rosa traditional matt wall and floor tile 200mm x 200mm

The tiles help to protect the most vulnerable parts of the wall from splashes and moisture, and also cuts the cost of tiling an entire room. As part of the timeless Toledo range, you can mix and match these tiles with other colours and designs, yet still produce a coordinated look.

3. Make a feature of your floor

Feature floors look great in bathrooms and kitchens, especially when paired with metro tiles on the walls. With these amazing patterned tiles, this is the exact look we’ve gone for.

Calcolo Girona blue traditional matt wall and floor tile 200mm x 200mm

With this type of tile, you will have to put a little more time and effort into planning, however, I think you’ll agree, all the hard work is totally worth it. The appearance of a vintage Victorian floor is simply stunning.

Choose the exact combination of tiles you need from the Girona range, including borders and corner tiles, in blue, red or monochrome colour schemes.

4. Combine tile designs

Another interesting way to use patterned tiles is to combine with other designs. In this example, the upper half of the wall uses a colourful motif, whereas the bottom half contains stylish metro tiles. A border has been used to create a break between both styles.

Calcolo Valencia Maya traditional matt wall and floor tile 200mm x 200mm

With this type of design, you can carry on using the same patterned tiles across your floor without it being too overpowering. The glazed porcelain tiles from the Valencia range come in a variety of Victorian-inspired patterns and colours, with a high quality matt finish.

5. Different shapes

If you’re searching for a completely different look, rather than big, bold patterns, these hexagonal tiles make the perfect backdrop for any bathroom wash basin or kitchen sink.

Calcolo Moonbeam sea blue glazed porcelain wall and floor tiles 267 x 232mm

Hexagonal tiles have been in vogue for quite some time, helping to add intrigue and character to what could otherwise be a rather uninspired tiled wall. This design is ideal for more modern or contemporary interiors.

6. No need to feel blue

As we’ve previously seen, patterned tiles don’t have to be big, bold and brash. They can be a little more subtle and sophisticated.

Granada blue traditional matt wall and floor tile 75mm x 385mm

Bringing a relaxed air of calm to any bathroom or kitchen space, these gorgeous blue wall tiles are long and narrow, with 3 slightly different designs for an intriguing appearance.
