I had a great chat with Victoria Plum customer Laura Lilley (@mrslilley17 on Instagram), where we discussed how one inspirational image on our website had a big influence on her bathroom remodel, and discovered Laura’s top tips and tricks for anyone wishing to give their bathroom an update too!

Nicky Kingston (NK), Victoria Plum Stylist: “Hi Laura, thanks for taking time out to chat with me. So, where did this beautiful bathroom renovation take place?”

Laura Lilley (LL): “Hi! We’re based in Kenilworth, a beautiful little town in Warwickshire. We took a gamble and bought our bungalow after seeing the floor plan—it was a massive 170 square metres and, due to the state it was in, it was a more affordable house by the square metre.”

NK: “By the sounds of it, you were left with little choice but to carry out a thorough update throughout!”

LL: “Yes, the state of the house meant everything needed ripping out and replacing!”

NK: “It sounds so exciting, a full home renovation! How did you start to gather ideas for your project?”

LL: “I know it’s easier said than done but find a style you like and make a “mood board”. Save pictures on Instagram and Pinterest. Also, if you see something you like on an influencer’s page, ask questions like where they got things from, what colours they went for, etc. We also found inspiration on supplier websites, and found your image (see further down this article) when we were looking at baths, bath sizes and layouts.

NK: “Don't forget our bathroom ideas section! Big question: Are you and your husband’s interior styles the same? How did you get around that?”

LL: “Our styles are quite different. I was brought up with horses and lived on farms, so wooden floors and neutral tones were my preference. James was very much more modern-focussed. Due to this, we ended up with a modern rustic style—wooden doors and shelves, but with bold modern colours and furnishings. The hardest decision for us was choosing the bathroom tiles. We both wanted colour but had different style tastes. However, after trawling Instagram and Pinterest, we finally came to an agreement!”

NK: “It sounds like a pretty big project, but totally worth it! Did you have any help with the renovation?”

LL: “We had builders, plumbers and electricians in to do the bits we couldn’t—but we ripped everything out and did lots of clearing. All of the drawing and amendments we did ourselves, as well as all of the decorating. We also replaced and insulated the loft (horrible job!!).”

NK: “This is obviously a big project, not your usual, simple “bathroom update”. How long did it all take?”

LL: “We bought the house in August 2019, then spent September to December drawing up plans, researching suppliers and ripping everything out ourselves. In January, our builders began doing the things we couldn’t, and we officially moved in during August 2020—exactly a year to the day since we started.”

NK: “This is a truly inspirational project! Do you have any final tips for future bathroom renovators?”

LL: “Go bold! If you need some form of motivation, this is it. Worst case, you can repaint or replace, but you won’t need to! Because, if you follow your gut instinct or choose your favourite colour, you’ll love it. Trust me!”
