What bathroom accessories do I need?

Posted by Rebecca Doody in Buying guides | 1 year ago 5 min read

If you're looking to spruce up your bathroom, you may be wondering which accessories you need? We show you exactly which elements you'll require and why.

Looking to spruce up your interiors and add a bit of functionality to your old bathroom? Bathroom decor and fixtures are a great way to rework the look of your bathroom interior and bathroom floor, without having to commit to large revamp projects that take time and, not to mention, a considerable amount of money. Bathroom essentials can help you organise your bathrooms, making them look and feel not only cleaner and more accessible, but roomier, too!

But where should you begin? There are many different fittings and bathroom accessories that you can choose from, making it difficult to identify the ones worth going for. Lucky for you, we've compiled a list of common accessories and some more obscure options, that'll not only add convenience but also a touch of visual texture, making your bathroom look even better than before!

Towel bars (AKA towel rails)

Where there is a bathroom, "powder room" or a toilet, there is bound to be a towel. No matter what that towel is used for, be it showering or to dry your hands, it'll need a place to hang and dry out after use.

There are many different towel rails that you can get, from racks to bars and even hooks which you can hang on the bathroom door or beside the sink. Which bathroom accessory and towel rail you should pick all depeneds on the size of your bathroom as well as your personal preference. If you’ve got the space, a towel rack would look beautiful, neatly hanging your towels up to dry. If you’re a little space constricted, a towel bar or hook would be a great, space-effective way to keep a towel close at hand. As with any of these options, there are many different designs and styles you can choose, meaning you should be able to find one that matches the theme of your intended design. Regardless, these are a definite must-have, ensuring your towels dry out properly and look nice while doing it!

Toilet paper holder (AKA toilet roll holder)

No one wants to pick up a toilet paper roll from the ground, and placing it on a shelf nearby can get tedious. Toilet paper holders are definite must-haves in your bathroom. Coming in many designs and colours, it’s important to look for toilet accessories that are sturdy and able to last a while. Don’t be afraid to splurge a bit on a high quality holder, as it’ll be used and tugged at almost every day.

You may not think it, but there are many different kinds of toilet paper holders. There are wall-mounted or built-in options that many of us are accustomed to, but you could even take it one step further and get a dispenser. If you simply don't want to drill into your wall, and have sufficient space around your toilet, a floorstanding toilet paper holder is a fantastic way to bring an eye-catching piece into the room. They come in different designs and are great for storing additional rolls (ensuring visitors aren't caught short or end up snooping round your storage for spares!).

Shelving and storage

Having shelves and storage units in your bathroom is a great way to keep things tucked away neatly, offering a practical way to display some items. Shelves can be used both in and out of the shower area, and you can use them to hold your shower items or other bathroom essentials you need on a regular basis. You can store folded spare towels on them or even get cute baskets to hold miscellaneous items. Keep the things that you don’t use as often, such as bathroom cleaner and wipes, away and out of sight so that your bathroom looks neat and uncluttered. You could even add decorative items to your shelves or show them off in glass sections of a storage unit, if it has a display area, too.

Soap dispensers and dishes

Liquid soap dispensers are a great way to jazz up the sink area if you think the liquid soap bottles you bought straight from the shop are an eyesore. Soap dispensers or soap trays can either be wall-mounted (which is especially good for shower enclosures) or freestanding, although it's always better to wall mount when you can to reduce the clutter around your sink or vanity unit. You can also buy liquid shower gel refills that are available in many different colours, scents and even textures, meaning that you can pick out exactly what you want.

If you opt for the solid bar approach or have a solid face wash soap, for example, you’ll need to get a soap dish to hold it (soap bars have an annoying habit of slipping off ceramic surfaces!). Similarly to soap dispensers, they can be mounted or freestanding depending on what you want and will keep your bar soap clean and away from other items. Dirt finds its way anywhere, and will inevitably find its way onto your sink counter.

Both soap dispensers and soap dishes can be found in many different styles to suit any particular design you’re going for, meaning you needn't worry about it clashing with the rest of your design.

Toilet brush holders

It's highly likely you've not given much thought to how your toilet brush and toilet brush holder will look, but it can impact the way your bathroom feels. Accessorising with a high quality, well-finished toilet brush and holder is one of those things that you never realised could change anything—until you've given it a go! It's amazing how refining such a little thing can offer an air of luxury. Plus, cheap plastic brushes can break easily, so it’s a great way to save yourself the hassle of constant replacements.

Conclusion

Just like that, we’ve come to the end of this article about how to spruce up your bathroom with accessories. Of course, the list of accessories we've included isn't exhaustive. There are still many other bathroom décor items to consider for your bathroom such as shower screens, toothbrush holders, bath mats and so on. The list really does go on!

When it comes to accessorising your bathroom, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Adding things that fit in well with your concept and design style is important, but you also need to maintain a balance and not include too many things that may take up more space than they’re worth. Prioritise getting the accessories that you are more likely to need first, even if you don’t feel like they’d make the greatest visual impact on the room. A bathroom has to be practical first and foremost, after all!
