8 great small bathrooms from our customers—Share your Style

Posted by Ruth Foster in Customers' rooms | 1 year ago 9 min read

If your small bathroom is giving you big headaches, relief is at hand. Discover 8 inspired bathroom designs, dreamed up by our creative customers.

As we all know, a small bathroom can present a huge challenge when the time comes for a refresh. From teeny, tiny cloakrooms to less-than-palatial master bathrooms, it can feel like a game of Tetris (remember that?) trying to slot everything into the perfect position.

For nearly 10 years, we’ve encouraged you to “Share your Style” with other Victoria Plum customers, by sending us photos of your completed bathroom creations. And you certainly don’t disappoint! To help you achieve your own dream bathroom, no matter how small it may be, we’ve picked out 8 of our favourite small bathrooms, as designed by our customers. We hope you’ll be inspired!

Warm and welcoming

@tourofseventyfour on Instagram

Warm and unique neutrals are a wonderful alternative to the usual (and often slightly boring) creams and whites. Here, Victoria Plum customer @tourofseventyfour has given this small space a coating of “Skimming Stone” by Farrow & Ball—a soft, warm grey with a mauve undertone. It helps to create a soothing and contemporary look, which is paired beautifully with strong black accents found in the tapware and bathroom accessories.

Marble-effect tiles give this cloakroom a natural touch, with a few statement pieces such as the mirror, shelving and light shade, added in for good measure. A useful tip for styling a small space like a cloakroom is to under-style rather than over-style. Select some key accessories that you love and keep the rest minimal.

An uplifting downstairs cloakroom

@thejourneyatno.30 on Instagram

Dulux have recently named their Colour of the Year 2023 “Wild Wonder”. The soft, yellow-toned shade used in this cloakroom links fittingly to Dulux’s choice for the coming year. Wild Wonder is said to be an uplifting golden hue that derives from nature, encouraging feelings of freedom and wonder. @thejourneyatno.30’s space certainly reflects this sense of positivity, enhanced by lots of natural light and clean, contrasting white metro tiles.

The striking black accents add further contrast, while the black panelled radiator brings an extra layer of contemporary design. Another element of this cloakroom that demonstrates a considered feeling of balance is the delicately patterned floor tiles. These are subtle and don’t overpower, yet create a lovely point of visual interest.

Space-saving hacks

@thestudiofrome on Instagram

This is a particular favourite of mine, as Victoria Plum customer @thestudiofrome has included multiple space-saving hacks.

The first is the cupboard and storage spaces that are built into the outskirts of the room, allowing for handy shelving above it, optimising the overall space.

The second, and perhaps the more pleasing on the eye, is the small wooden stool which has been used as a countertop for the basin. Countertops can often be bulky and even countertop shelves can jut out into the rest of the room. Here, however, the rustic stool is narrow yet big enough for an elegant basin. The matt black tap is wall mounted so that there is no extra space taken up on the stool, while accompanying soap products can be handily placed on the upper shelving.

As we’ve already seen, light and airy interiors that feature patterned floor tiles, white metro tiles and black accents appear

A maximalist approach

@thediydads on Instagram

Just because your bathroom suite is compact in size, doesn’t mean you can’t take a more maximalist approach with plants and patterns. Victoria Plum customers @thediydads demonstrate a beautiful example of maximalism, using light, warming colours throughout the main products and décor. They have also added hanging and wall mounted plants to bring an organic and natural feel, whilst not unnecessarily taking up further floor and surface space. They’ve also included brighter and more playful colours and patterns through their use of towels and other soft furnishings.

For less spacious bathrooms, I’d highly recommend using light and neutral shades as the base for your colour palette, and injecting personality through the smaller details.

Another useful tip to make your bathroom appear larger, which @thediydads have achieved here, is to invest in a folding shower bath screen. This simply opens up the space when the shower bath isn’t being used.

Classic style

@newhome_oldhouse_ on Instagram

A traditionalist’s dream, this small bathroom uses a selection of beautiful, medium-sized products from our Orchard Bathrooms brand. The shower bath seems smaller than others due to its curved shape, but here, Victoria Plum customer @newhome_oldhouse_ has created the illusion of totally separate bath and shower areas, using a traditional bath filler tap and shower handset at one end, and a shower head at the other.

The Dulwich stone grey vanity unit provides storage without taking up too much space, while boxed-in pipes around the edges of the bathroom make a great low-level shelf for products and accessories.

An ensuite with storage to spare

@my70sbungalow on Instagram

Victoria Plum customer @my70sbungalow has incorporated maximal storage space into a small ensuite, demonstrating the versatility of our Eden bathroom furniture range.

By combining the vanity unit, back to wall toilet unit, plus 2 slim storage units, she’s created an ensuite that’s perfect for families. And while the furniture may be compact, it still offers ample cupboard and drawer space for all those essentials.

Similarly, quadrant shower enclosures are ideal when planning the layout of a smaller space, as they fit neatly into the corner without intruding on the rest of the bathroom.

Life’s little luxuries

@zitajanehome on Instagram

When decorating a small space, the general advice is to stay away from darker colours, as they tend to make your room feel even tighter and more cramped than it already is. Whilst this may be true, there are ways of using darker shades effectively in small bathrooms. For example, Victoria Plum customer @zitajanehome has bravely gone for this deep, matt green with a grey undertone (the paint used is “Darlington” by Coat Paints). The reason this works so well is that it sits amongst a wider palette of neutrals, balanced beautifully by bright, white marble-effect tiles.

In terms of products, Zita has opted for a contemporary freestanding tub. This can be quite space-consuming in many cases, but the Orchard Contemporary freestanding bath used here is more compact than others (with a width of just 800mm). It’s perfect for a smaller bathroom, meaning you needn’t compromise on that desirable, luxurious feeling that is associated with freestanding baths.

Small, stylish and modern

@graceyshome on Instagram

Despite the shower bath, toilet and basin being quite compact in this bathroom, the size of the space doesn’t disturb the stylishness and modern feeling it conveys.

With soothing sage green, textured wall tiles, the softer elements are offset by contrastingly darker accessories. Our ever-popular and on-trend black-framed shower screen adds an industrial edge and visual interest. Victoria Plum customer @graceyshome has effectively combined black and chrome finishes, creating a balanced look that’s pleasing on the eye.

There doesn’t appear to be a natural source of light here, but the space is clearly well-lit which makes a world of difference in small bathrooms. So, here’s a final tip from me: Don’t forget your bathroom lighting. Selecting a well-designed, eye-catching fixture can add a further layer of carefully considered styling and interior design expertise to your space.
