Why do we sing in the shower?
From the most majestic Mezzo-soprano to the tone-deaf warbler, we all enjoy singing in the shower (or the bathtub) once in a while.
And, while we may think this is a modern invention, the truth is somewhat different. As far back as the 14th century, Ibn Khaldun, the Arab historian, in Chapter 1 of his book "Muqaddimah" writes:
“Likewise, when those who enjoy a hot bath inhale the air of the bath, so that the heat of the air enters their spirits and makes them hot, they are found to experience joy. It often happens that they start singing, as singing has its origin in gladness.”
Back in the present day, there are many reasons why the bathroom is the perfect place in which to exercise our vocal chords.
Acoustic properties
First off, the bathroom, with its tiled walls, hard surfaces and lack of soft furnishings, provides the perfect acoustic properties for a good sing-along. The sound of your voice will reverberate and echo, making it sound richer and more resonant, enhancing the overall experience.
Privacy
Bathrooms give us a private place in which to unwind, relax and, I dare say, let go a little. With the door shut firmly and no one there to judge you, why shouldn’t you belt out a tune or two?
Stress relief
As we’ve already touched upon, singing has been shown to have various psychological benefits, releasing those feel-good endorphins and generally reducing stress levels. And what better place can you find to unwind and relax than the bathroom?
Sheer enjoyment
Singing is simply a joyful activity for many of us. It allows us to connect with the music, express emotions (think upbeat tempos for happy moods and deep, slow, soulful songs for melancholic moments) and experience a sense of personal satisfaction. If you want to experiment or improvise, who’s to stop you?
For all these reasons (and many more), singing in the shower is a fun activity. However, if you find your singing gets drowned out by the torrent of water cascading from your shower, we may just have the perfect solution for you...

The most popular shower songs according to Spotify
So, what is the UK’s favourite song to sing in the shower? Well, we undertook a bit of research of our own to find this out.
