Snow is falling, all around you. Children playing—having fun. Sound familiar? Is a tune forming in your head?
Your footsteps crunch across the crisp, frozen path as you enter the welcoming glow of your home. The lights are low and the smell of soft spices fills the air. The hearth crackles warmth and comfort as you head up the stairs for a nice relaxing shower.
Once there, you’ll no doubt be met with the sudden desire to sing. None of us are quite sure why showers encourage us to sing quite so much but it’s a fact few of us can ignore.
So, following on from our highly acclaimed “5 bathroom songs we all love”, here to warm the cockles of your heart—and soothe the uncontrollable throbbing in your eardrums—is a countdown of the best Christmas classics to sing in the shower.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood—The Power of Love
Power really is the word in the case of this belting power ballad. Learn the words, feel the building beat and blast out this stunning classic to your terrified neighbours.
John Lennon—Happy Xmas (War is Over)
A soulful, earnest classic, Lennon’s Christmas hit cuts through all the chocolate and mince pies to deliver a hard-hitting, (wonderfully sing-able!) moral message about the human spirit at Christmas.
Wham!—Last Christmas
Love the 80s, hate the 80s. You can’t deny the undying catchiness of this timeless Christmas hit, sung by the late, great George Michael. Belt it out, loud and proud, so the whole neighbourhood can hear!
And, if you're playing #Whamageddon (if you don't know what it is, head to Twitter!), can you really resist hitting that play button?
Jona Lewie—Stop the Cavalry
Whether you’re quietly mumbling the “Dubbadubbadumdum dubbadubbadum” to yourself or proudly singing along with Lewie’s actual words, you can’t help but absolutely love this effortlessly beautiful classic.
Eartha Kitt—Santa Baby
This raunchy, sexy Christmas song can warm up a cold winter’s night like nothing else. But the cheeky, sultry, contagious song is maybe best reserved for your evening showers…
Slade—Merry Christmas Everybody
You may be able to sing a bit like Noddy Holder—after you’ve gargled with gravel for a while—but no one can truly do justice to his feral “IT’S CHRISTMAS!”
Nobody could blame you for trying though so why not see if the bathroom acoustics work to your advantage.
Bing Crosby—White Christmas
It’s perhaps a little controversial to place this above Slade’s legendary hit but since this is a shower-singing chart, for sheer sing-ability, this has to win.
Maybe it’s the careful, perfectly-paced tune behind this song; maybe it’s the silky-smoothness of old Bing’s voice but White Christmas is one of those Christmas classics that you just can’t stop yourself from singing.
The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl—Fairytale of New York
Surely the greatest Christmas song ever written? Whether you sing the piping MacColl part or the drawling Shane MacGowan slur (or desperately twist your throat in lots of unhealthy ways to try to sing both), you surely WILL have sung this timeless, perfect Christmas epic many times in the shower.
