Ideal Standard: 5 tips to create the perfect rental bathroom

Posted by Adam Chard in Inspiration | 4 years ago 4 min read

If you let property or are thinking of doing so, the bathroom can be a make or break decision for many a potential renter. In this article, we asked Ideal Standard, the UK’s leading bathroom brand, to share their top tips on effective bathroom improvements you can make to create the perfect rental bathroom.

These days, it can feel like there’s a never-ending to-do list when it comes to renting out a property. Don’t let the bathroom add to that list and take note of what we recommend when it comes to the perfect rental bathroom.

This is a room that can be make or break when it comes to a renter’s decision. If a bathroom is poorly decorated, or unkempt, it has the potential to put renters off from choosing a property. Aside from spending a fortune to transform a bathroom into a palatial-like spa, we believe, there are some easy steps to make the bathroom appealing to tenants and easy to maintain.

Tip 1. Tile your walls

Using tiles on your bathroom walls rather than paint is a good idea as they are easier to clean and more durable than paint or wallpaper. It will also cost you less in the long run when it comes to maintenance as they can be replaced individually. Ensure you choose a timeless style of tile as it'll help you avoid making the room look dated over the years.

Tip 2. Consider the colour

Although white bathrooms feel fresh and bright, they are also the hardest to keep clean! Light colours on walls and floors show even the tiniest of marks or stains and dirt. Darker colours can hide marks or discolouring, meaning that you don’t have to continuously spend money re-painting or cleaning to make them look new. Be careful when selecting dark tiles for smaller spaces as this can make it appear even smaller. Choosing to tile halfway up the wall and then painting the upper section of the wall in a lighter colour can help with this, as well as adding a design feature contrast.

Tip 3. Storage saves space

Having a nice storage unit, even if it is just a simple cupboard, helps to keep the bathroom from being cluttered, this can be particularly helpful when the space is smaller than average. We offer a wide range of stylish storage solutions within our Concept Air collection, such as our Concept Air gloss and matt white cabinet. For those smaller spaces, our Concept Space collection offers solutions for even the most complicated of layouts. For example, our Concept Space corner basin allows it to fit snugly into a corner, rather than taking up valuable flat wall space.

Tip 4. Spend money to save money

There is something to be said about spending money in the right areas of a rental bathroom. Buying a bathroom suite is a high value purchase and, particularly with a rental property, you want to make that suite work as hard for you as possible. Sometimes finding the cheapest price doesn’t always pay off. We advise, not only should you look at cost, but check things such as the warranty offered and customer reviews from people who have already purchased that product. At Ideal Standard, we offer a lifetime guarantee on all ceramics, showing we’re confident about the quality of our products.

Tip 5. Design to stand the test of time

You might be really into mid-century design or totally partial to a bit of kitsch décor around the house, however your rental property, and particularly the bathroom, isn’t the place to start putting your interior design skills to the test. Opt for bathroom fixtures and fittings that are timeless. Thin lines, soft curves and colours that aren’t too loud will provide potential renters with a mostly blank canvas to add their subtle finishing touches to, such as towels and accessories in their style of choice. Our Tesi collection is full of products with soft geometric lines, giving it that timeless feel with a contemporary finish.
