Keeping your bathroom organised with shelves and caddies

Posted by Adam Chard in DIY advice | 2 years ago 8 min read

If your bathroom feels cramped and cluttered, why not follow these tips and tricks to keep things neat and organised?

How often do you think about your bathroom? You might give it a moment’s thought when it’s in need of a good clean, but that’s about it, which is strange considering how much time you actually devote to it! It’s where we start and end our day, and, as an average person, you can expect to spend over an entire year of your life in the bathroom!

Given the time spent in said room, your bathroom should be somewhere you can enjoy and relax, and that starts with a clean, organised space.

Here are a few easy tips for keeping your bathroom organised with simple shelves and caddies. These offer a handsome and flexible alternative to fully fitted furniture and goes to show that a few design and storage changes could transform the entire look and feel of your bathroom.

Keep reading to learn more about keeping your bathroom organised with shelves and caddies.

Metal shelves for towels

Do you find yourself stuffing freshly washed towels into a linen closet? Considering the amount of money you can spend on fine towels, we encourage you to show them off!

Having your towels out and in the air can help keep them fresh and ready to use. You can also use the colour of your towels to complement the style and look of your room.

By simply installing some stylish wire or metal shelves, you can easily fold, roll or hang your towels. Plus, if you’re entertaining guests, they won't need to go rifling through your cupboards to find them.

A bonus with installing metal shelves is that, by taking your towels out of the cupboard, you've made space for the less stylish-looking products you need to store. Towels come out and numerous bottles of bubble bath or lotions can go in and out of sight.

Hang toilet paper rolls

No bathroom is complete without toilet paper rolls. But these bulky rolls often take up much of the space under your sink or sit visibly in their packaging, which isn't ideal.

Keeping your bathroom organised with shelves and caddies designed specifically for toilet rolls is a great storage tip. It can be as simple as fitting a shelf with bookend-like pieces or a more elaborate shelf with half circles or cubbies for each individual roll.

One of our favourite ideas is a hanging shelf. It creates space for your toilet paper rolls, keeps your floor free of any bulky roll holders and creates valuable space in your cupboards.

Wall outlet shelves and chargers

Many of us struggle to use the space in our bathrooms efficiently, especially when it comes to electrical devices. Continually taking them out and putting them away again or leaving them scattered untidily around the room. There are a few ways in which you can use well-placed shelves to make use of the space around your power socket.

For items like electric shavers, toothbrushes or hot hair styling equipment, installing a shelf just below or above the socket could completely change the flow of your bathroom routine.

If it’s something that you use regularly, such as an electric toothbrush or hair straighteners, then the shelf can become a convenient spot on which to place these. Shelves are particularly handy for heated items such as hair dryers or straighteners.

Taking this idea one step further, one of the best space-saving solutions we’ve discovered is this in-wall toothbrush charger from Proofvision (see below). Compatible with all Oral B and Braun electric toothbrushes, it’s sleek, unobtrusive and keeps the space around your basin wire-free. Plus, there’s no need for additional bathroom shelving!

2 or 3-tier shelving caddies

Bathroom caddies are very much in vogue at the moment. With so many styles and colours to choose from, you can find one that matches your decor perfectly.

These caddies are perfect not only for storage (especially if you lack cupboard space), but can also add a stylish touch. These versatile units can store pretty much anything.

Unlike fixed shelves, there’s no need for nails, screws and hammers! Place it wherever you need it, at any moment. This 2-tiered glass unit (pictured below) works well in any corner of your bathroom.

Towel racks that double as shelves

A feature in many bathrooms, towel racks are usually a straightforward affair. However, we’d suggest gaining as much organisational advantage from it as you can!

Hanging racks that double as shelves are a great use of space. You can store your most frequently used products in a tidy yet convenient manner, and they don’t take up additional surface space.

Bathroom door shelving and caddies

It doesn't matter how small 3-tier shelving caddies are. If space comes at a premium in your bathroom, even a small floor piece can seem enormous. For smaller areas, keeping your bathroom organised with storage that fits your space is a must.

One solution, and a great way of creating storage space without dominating a small space, is adding shelves to the back of your door or even fitting over-the-door caddies.

You can use items like mirror shelves or door vanities. These can be attached to your door with bars that hook over your door. Door hooks are a simple way to hang storage too. There’s no need to drill into a wall, when you can simply hook your shelves over the door!

Cupboard door caddies

Similar to over-the-door shelving, but for smaller items, cupboards are ideal for storage. However, it’s easy for them to become untidy. An over-the-door caddy is a useful addition to a cupboard and, better yet, they aren't visible externally.

Cupboard door caddies can be used for storing frequently used products which don’t look particularly attractive, such as cleaning items that you want to keep handy but don’t want on display.

Over-the-toilet shelving

Your toilet takes up a large part of your bathroom, especially in a small space. But that doesn't mean the space above your toilet needs to be an empty void. Utilise this area with shelves. They are handy and convenient for spare toilet rolls and a useful area to accessorise with plants!

In-shower caddy

It’s easy to accumulate clutter in a bathroom, like products we use in the shower. But there’s really no need to worry, as you can place a shelf or caddy inside your shower enclosure or walk in shower area meaning your products are ready to go when you are. Waterproof and easy to clean, caddies come in various designs to match your fixtures for a stylish touch. A simple corner-fitting wire caddy is inexpensive and easy to install, meaning all those shampoos, soaps and sponges are easy to access, even when there’s water in your eyes!
