5 sink plug ideas for beautiful bathrooms

Don’t let all your bathroom style ideas go down the drain. Discover the perfect plug for your sink.

If you’re planning a modern bathroom renovation, a sink plug will probably be one of the last things on your shopping list. Usually sold as a single unit known as a waste, this plumbing accessory is vital, nonetheless.

Often purchased as an afterthought, there are many different types of sink plug available. Each one has a different look and function, so it’s a good idea to think about what is best for your needs. Fitting a sink plug is a relatively straightforward task for any plumber or bathroom fitter, leaving you with a fully functioning basin that not only performs well but also complements your overall design scheme.

So, don’t let all your good ideas go to waste. Check out these 5 different sink plug ideas and be inspired!

1. Pop up sink plug and waste

By far and away one of the most popular designs, the pop up sink plug and waste is simple to operate and offers a clean and uncluttered appearance.

Simply press down to plug your sink (it’ll make a pleasing “click clack” noise) and press down again to drain—it’s that easy!

Whilst chrome is the most common finish, you’ll find other finishes like black, gold, rose gold and brushed brass, which are designed to match other fixtures and fittings, like taps, showers and accessories.

Before you buy, you will need to work out which sink plug you need; slotted or unslotted. This depends on whether your basin has an overflow or not.

2. Classic chainstay sink plug

Perfect for traditional basins, the classic chainstay sink plug is an old favourite. Once the most common type of basin waste, it isn’t hard to see why it was—and indeed remains—so popular. Like many successful inventions, the design is incredibly simple and easy to use. Simply pop the plug in place and pull the chain to drain water away.

However, before you go ahead and purchase, you will need to check that your chosen sink contains a chainstay hole (usually situated near to the overflow hole). Drilling one into a basin yourself isn’t recommended as it may cause damage.

3. Flip over sink plug waste

Another modern type of sink plug, the flip over waste is a simple yet effective design. Consisting of a pivoting metal disc, simply press down into a horizontal position to seal and fill the basin, then press down again. This will flip the disc into a vertical position and your basin will drain.

4. Square sink plug waste

A variation on the simple pop up sink plug waste, this square-shaped model is ideal for designer bathrooms where every minute detail can make a big difference. It is really simple to use and produces a highly contemporary look, complementing more angular bathroom suites well.

5. Integrated sink plug and tap

Some taps come with a sink plug which can be operated by pressing a rod or lever at the rear. This means you needn’t get your hands wet at all when draining the basin.
