Kiss Kiss Bam Bam: the inspiration

Kiss Kiss Bam Bam is arguably one of Louise’s most recognisable works, with its bold and vibrant depiction of a glamorous lady, resplendent in dark glasses with pouting lips and an explosion of flowers surrounding her. To find out more about this stunning artwork, we chatted with Louise.

What inspired this artwork?

My beautiful girl, my muse, my daughter ... the love of my life and my absolute favourite subject to paint.

What is the story behind the chilli earrings?

One year my work was chosen for The Summer Show at the Royal Academy and I had to attend “Varnishing Day”, traditionally the day when artists put the finishing touches to their work before the show opens. I love the story of Turner attending this day and adding a small splash of red to the foreground of his piece helping it to stand out against his contemporaries. Rebellious Red also represents the rebel with in me.

The original of this piece was created for the Daisy Green Collection of Restaurants and stands over 4 metres tall in their flagship venue in Victoria. I wanted a small “food based” image within the piece and the chillies do this, as well as symbolising the “red hot passion” that I wanted to portray.

Are there features in the artwork that you are particularly fond of? If so, what are they?

Most of the symbols within my works are there for a reason and represent a personal feeling or memory. The 2 huge peonies in the hair are the tree peonies in my best friend’s garden. I love these flowers and Mary calls me each year as they come into bloom so I can nip round and photograph them. They appear in many guises in many of my works and represent our friendship.
