Wall hung basin buying guide

Posted by Adam Chard in Buying guides | 9 months ago 6 min read

When it comes to creating a contemporary bathroom, a wall hung basin can be the perfect choice for achieving that sleek, minimalist look.

If you’re thinking about a new basin for your bathroom, this guide will give you an overview of wall hung basins at Victoria Plum, and what you should consider when choosing one.

What is a wall hung basin?

A wall hung basin, as the name suggests, is fixed to the wall and doesn’t feature any form of pedestal. This means the pipework under the sink is exposed. It is then usually chromed to look more pleasing on the eye.

Wall hung basins are usually more contemporary in style, creating an uncluttered, minimalist look that’s ideal for making the most of space in a cloakroom or ensuite, but also looks fantastic in a larger bathroom.

Just one thing to note, before we continue. “Basin” and “sink” are both terms which are commonly used interchangeably for what is essentially the same item. To avoid any confusion, we will continue using the term “basin” throughout this buying guide.

Is a wall hung basin right for my bathroom?

Wall hung basins can suit a wide variety of bathroom designs but are particularly well-suited to ensuites and cloakrooms thanks to their space-efficient design. Keeping the floor space underneath clear creates a lighter, less cluttered feeling. It also makes for easier cleaning, as there are no awkward nooks to negotiate.

If you find wall space is at a premium, a corner wall hung basin, like the Eden basin pictured below, may be your best option.

Styles

As we’ve already mentioned, most wall hung basins are contemporary in style, with clean lines and simple shapes common features to look out for. If you’re seeking a more rounded shape, the Monnow wall hung basin from Orchard Bathrooms comes in 2 widths: 340mm (pictured below), which is great for cloakrooms or ensuites, and a larger 550mm for bigger spaces or master bathrooms.

The Pichola wall hung basin, also from Mode Bathrooms (pictured below), offers a simpler look, with a sleek, half moon shape and ultra-compact design.

For something a little more designer, why not consider the Harrison wall hung basin from Mode Bathrooms. Featuring a deep and spacious design, this premium basin is designed to conceal pipework for a clean, seamless appearance.

Measuring for your wall hung basin

As with any bathroom fitting, it’s always best to measure the space you have available to make it easier to narrow down your choices. Watch our video below, showing you how to measure for a basin:

Anything over 500mm in width is perfectly suited to a master bathroom. However, if you're seeking a wall hung basin for a cloakroom or ensuite, sizes below this should be suitable.

Choosing the right taps, waste and bottle trap for your wall hung basin

For a complete installation of your new wall hung basin, you will need to think about the following components:

Basin mixer tap

Most of our wall hung basins at Victoria Plum come with a single tap hole, which means you will also need a basin mixer tap. If you didn’t already know, basin mixer taps are single taps that combine both the hot and cold water flows, allowing you to mix them to your preferred temperature.

While there are many different designs available, it may be worth considering a smaller, cloakroom basin mixer tap if your basin is also smaller in size. A contemporary style tap, like the Derwent square basin mixer tap (pictured below) will mostly reflect the general style of your wall hung basin.

For an on-trend look, why not consider a finish other than chrome for your tap, like brushed brass, matt black or gold?

Basin waste

The waste is a vital part of your wall hung basin setup, allowing you to drain water away efficiently. These days, pop up and flip over designs are more popular than the traditional chainstay plug.

To understand which basin waste you require, you need to work out whether your chosen basin has an overflow hole or not? If it does, you will need a slotted basin waste. If it doesn’t you will need an unslotted waste.

You’ll find a variety of designs to choose from, however it may be worth matching the finish to that of your tap. Check out our basin waste ideas for more inspiration.

Bottle trap

In most cases, if your pipework extends from the wall, you will need a bottle trap. This vital component helps maintain hygiene by preventing harmful sewer gases from entering your bathroom. A built-in filter is also designed to prevent smaller articles, which shouldn’t go down your drain, from obstructing your pipework.

Chrome is a very common finish for bottle traps, however you could choose to match the metallic finishes of your tap and waste with a black, brushed brass or gold option.
