Your complete guide to shower heads and handsets

Posted by Adam Chard in Buying guides | 4 years ago 6 min read

When the time comes to upgrade or install a new shower, there are many different options to suit a whole variety of needs.

It may be the case that your existing system is still in good working order, meaning it could actually be easier and more cost-efficient to simply upgrade your shower with a new shower head or shower handset.

With this guide, we'll look at the different options available to you when replacing your shower head. First we'll examine shower handsets, which are used with shower rail kits and bath shower mixer taps. These are the most cost efficient form of shower head and the easiest to replace. We'll also take you through fixed shower heads, which can give you a more luxurious shower, in terms of both style and performance.

Shower handsets

Without proper maintenance, shower heads can quickly become worn and dated, due to the daily use they go through. An accumulation of limescale and a build-up of grime over time will ultimately lead to a poor shower experience.

Luckily, shower handsets are quick and easy to replace. Basic models such as the Orchard Splash 3 function hand shower are great value for money and will improve your shower in next to no time.

Style

Style is always a key consideration when choosing your shower head.

Just because you have a traditional style bathroom, doesn't mean this can't extend to the look and feel of your shower. Opt for a classic shower handset, like the Camberley traditional shower handset from The Bath Co., for an authentic period look and feel.

If you are looking for something in a contemporary design, the pencil style Slim round hand shower, embodies the very latest bathroom trends. For something a little more minimalist, there is a range of paddle style designs fully encased in chrome, with subtle detailing and an unobtrusive look.

Economy and performance

If your water pressure isn't great, and you don't have a shower pump installed, one simple way of improving the performance of your shower is by changing the shower head. If your current shower has a large head, it may be worth swapping to something smaller, with fewer holes. With the water forced through a smaller space, the pressure can be increased.

You'll find many shower heads come with a choice of spray patterns. Again, this can help you find a jet that works perfectly for you, giving you additional, more-focused pressure when you need it most.

Another way of improving the economy of your shower is to choose an airmix shower head. These cleverly designed shower heads introduce air into the mix of water, reducing your flow rate and cutting your water usage. There is no impact on the performance of your shower, with air filled water droplets bursting on your skin, for an invigorating and refreshing experience.

Fixed shower heads

Fitting a brand new fixed shower head requires a little more work to be carried out to your plumbing, but the final finish is stunning. If you already have a fixed shower head fitted, but it is looking outdated or simply not up to scratch, why not swap for an entirely new one?

There are 2 types of fixed shower heads: Shower heads with a wall arm and shower heads with a ceiling arm. Fixed shower heads have a distinct advantage over handsets, in that they can be positioned directly over the area in which you shower, so that there is no "leaning in" required. The water cleanses you from head to toe from directly above your head.

Fixed shower heads also look effortlessly stylish and are perfect for more minimalist style bathrooms or ensuites, as there is very little external pipework on display, especially if you use with a concealed valve.

Style

With a choice of angular, square styles, or round designs, most of our fixed shower heads feature a chrome-plated finished and come with a standard joint, which means they can be swivelled if you prefer a slightly angled jet of water.

Rain can style shower heads are very popular due to their elegant shape. They can be combined with straight ceiling arms or curved wall arms for a traditional look and feel.

For something decidedly more contemporary, why not choose an ultra-thin shower head? With a choice of square or round designs, they look simply stylish.

Technology

Where would we be if we didn't incorporate the latest technology into our shower heads? If you like listening to music whilst showering, but find it gets drowned out by the rush of the water, we have the perfect solution. With our innovative Bluetooth shower head, you can play music direct from your shower head using Bluetooth on your phone or tablet. To recharge, simply remove the waterproof speakers and plug in.

If you're one of those people who like the water temperature to be just right before setting foot inside your shower, you'll love our LED shower head. It changes colour from blue to red to indicate when the optimum temperature has been reached.

Wall outlet with handset

Another way to enhance your shower experience is to add a wall outlet with handset. These are ideal, if you already have an overhead shower, but want the flexibility of a handheld shower. They are also great if you prefer a bath but like the option of a handheld shower and are perfect if you have small children whose hair need washing on a regular basis.

There are a range to choose from in round or square designs, with a choice of shower heads to match your decor.

Maintaining your shower head or handset

Easy clean silicone rubber nozzles make maintenance simple. You can reduce the accumulation of limescale by simply rubbing with a sponge and some common bathroom cleaner. For more ingrained grime, a mixture of vinegar and water can really do the trick. Find out how to clean your shower head with our expert DIY guide.
